“I burned white sage so much, at one point people start thinking it was my cologne”
What is Sage? Where does it come from?
Saging also is known as smudging. It has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Like its family members, rosemary and mint, sage contains useful flavonoids and phenolic acids. These are known to boost health and help with numerous ailments. Sage also contains something called rosmarinic acid, like rosemary, which is a potent antioxidant—it protects cells against damage. Ancient Greeks and Romans used the herb in sacred gatherings. It was also used to reduce spoilage of meat. In the 10th century, Arab healers believed it promoted immortality. Europeans of the 14th century thought it would protect them from witchcraft. Here in the United States, sage has a long history with the Native population. Along with sweetgrass and cedar, sage is used to “smudge” homes, objects, and people to purify them.
What are the benefits of using sage internally?
I know this blog is about burning sage. However, the herb is too elite to not mention the internal benefits. Sage can be taken internally as a liquid, spray, lozenge, capsule, or tablet. Many people also enjoy sage as a tea or chew it then dispose of it.
Below are some of the reported benefits of using sage internally:
- Headache relief
- Reducing oxidative stress on the body
- Protecting against free radical damage
- Reducing inflammation
- Protecting against bacterial and viral infections
- As a dietary supplement for digestion
- Sore throat relief
- Protecting against memory loss
- Reducing depression or improving mood

“The research shows that burning sage, also referred to as smudging, in a room for an hour reduced airborne bacteria by 94 percent.”
What are the benefits of burning sage?
Many burn sage as a form of healing, protection, increased wisdom or boost defense against diseases. I burn sage mostly to get rid of negative vibes. When I purchase new items, I sage them to be cleansed of residual energy. This makes it easier to charge items to work for YOU. According to a holistic health website, other benefits of burning sage include: repelling insects, improving mood, reducing stress, anxiety, and improving intuition. It’s also been linked to helping with chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
Some of the reported benefits of burning sage include the following:
- Removing bacteria from the air
- Repelling insects
- Improving intuition
- Purifying specific objects
- Improving mood and reducing stress and anxiety
Where can sage be bought?
I purchased my sage here. Many people say you can grow your own sage. My green thumb isn’t as active as I’d like it to be lol. If you don’t like to purchase online, you can purchase a bundle or stick of sage from a local botanica shop. You can also buy loose-leaf sage, but the pre-wrapped bundles are slightly easier to handle.
How do you burn sage?
Now that you have your sage, it’s time to plan your ritual and decide what you are trying to accomplish by burning it. The practice of burning sage is ancient, rich, and steeped in cultural tradition. It’s important to have an idea of what you’ll like to accomplish when burning sage leaves. If it’s to clear the negative energy in the room, house, car, or a newly purchased item. Imprint it in your brain what you want. Before you burn it open a window. This helps the negative energy go out of the house, or car, wherever you’re at. Please keep in mind that sage burns quicky. You can use a lighter or a small blow torch (is what I use). Once the sage is lit you want to blow it out and let the smoke cleanse the air or objects you plan to cleanse. The sage I shared previously comes with a stand to place it in. This also keeps you from having ashes everywhere. You don’t have to burn the whole bundle. The bundle itself can be taken apart and broken into smaller pieces to minimize waste.
Sage from a spiritual perspective.
For those who wish to use the sage on themselves, here is what I do. I make sure the smoke touches my body but I don’t apply it too close*in order not to be burned. I sage the crown (top of my head) first, my midsection, both arms to the hands, both legs then the bottom of my feet. As I sage myself I say to myself I am ejecting the negative and welcoming positive vibes and good energy. I have locs so I will be sure to sage my locs. Especially on those days, a random person decides to touch my locs. Some people sage the new houses they move into and new vehicles they purchase. You can sage before you meditate to set the mood. I sage then use my singing bowl to raise my vibration or to get rid of a lower frequency I may be operating on.

Create a routine for burning perhaps once a week or as much as you’d like. You can smudge that new item you just purchased. Smudging yourself is necessary.
