What is Self Development?

The self is an individual person as the object of its own reflective consciousness. Since self is a reference by a subject to the same subject, this reference is necessarily subjective.

Personal development covers activities that improve awareness and identity. The development of talent builds potential. Self improvement feeds into aspects of human capital and the facilitation of employability or career enhancements for self employment. And the implementation of all of these raises the quality of life and contributes to the realization of dreams and aspirations. Personal development takes place over the course of a person's entire life.

Importance of knowing yourself

Knowing yourself is a lifelong journey. On the journey, you will have to dive deep into who you are, and not just on your favorite food or tv show. You need to know the real you that knows what brings you to fear, what exposes your vulnerabilities, what motivates you, the source of the self doubts you whisper in your head. Knowing this side of yourself will unlock your ability to become aware of the things that need to be improved upon.

Importance of modifying ourselves

Think of your brain, muscles, and internal health as a cell phone. The phone is currently working in decent shape. However, the software development team found ways to improve the battery life, have a new layout so the screens look different, and lastly decided they would update the operating system so it’s able to run faster. Why not give those same quality tweaks and updates to yourself?

Create a plan and a list of goals

Write down your goals, and break bigger goals down into smaller pieces. Put a date and/or term of time on the goals such as daily goals, weekly goals, monthly goals, and yearly goals. Create a plan for each goal. As we know plans do change for a variety of reasons and life doesn’t always allow us to operate on our own plan. Keep in mind the quote below.

“A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

                                                                        Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Planning

I’m sure many people would say they don’t have a favorite book, haven’t read a book since they graduated school, or just “don’t have time” to read. Although many of us can waste an hour or more on social media, watching tv, or gossiping about the latest nothings, we need to set aside thirty minutes to an hour for ourselves. Use this time to create an environment for much-needed reading, learning a new skill, listening to an educational podcast, listening to an audiobook, meditation, or yoga. Find a new hobby. Stop making time for the things that don’t push you to be great.

I fell in love with making myself better. And the ROI on investing in yourself is like compound interest but on steroids. Growth becomes easier and happens exponentially faster.

Adopt good habits

We all have good habits and bad habits -- recognize bad habits. Ask loved ones for feedback on things they feel that you can improve. It’s important to have thick skin if you’re going to ask a loved one for feedback since their opinions mean the most to us at times. Once you know the bad habits counteract with good habits.

Let go of the past

I’ll share a very personal story. One of my cousins had passed away a few years ago. He and I weren’t on the best of terms before he got killed. Growing up we were close but we fell out pretty bad. When he passed I felt that guilt for 2 years because I couldn’t speak to him ever again. I went to his gravesite, I talked to him, cried, and cleared the air. Once I did that I felt at peace, I felt my heart get lighter. We all carry so much extra baggage daily and most of us aren’t aware of it. It’s important that we let it out and let it go so we can grow.

Reaching your potential

I’ve been my worst enemy at times. I can over-analyze things and create doubts and fears that shouldn’t exist. I can relate to the battle of stepping out of the comfort zone not being sure what is on the other side. However, I can also attest to the pride of reaching new levels based within the territories outside of the comfort zone. The section of letting things go was me stepping out of my comfort zone in order to help you see letting go of hurt is a good thing. Now let that moment help you reach your potential. Let’s reach our potential together.

Be Happy

Do what makes you smile. Don’t depend on anyone else to make you happy. You are responsible for your own happiness. Do the things that you love.
